An inside look at writing: "Fill It Up"

I wrote this song while living in the Burbank, CA equestrian center. I'd wake up and get that fresh farm, grass, horse smell through the window and just get that warm, easy feeling. Just like Mom's home cooking. It was my home away from home in L.A. I was living the fast paced city life of 6am to 6pm pushing product as a salesman. I loved it. It challenged every aspect of my life. Social, physical and even love life. I'd get back to my home in Burbank and just write and practice. Analyzing what the folks on CMT were playing and even what I was playing. It was my hobby. I enjoyed it. It was about that time in March 2014, when I got the hunch that a change was coming. Not because of the SoCal weather, cause it rarely changes. It was just the internal feeling. The seasons are changing and you can feel it in your bones. So I began writing "Fill It Up". I was in a place where I wanted to see a different scene other than concrete and cars. I wanted to feel at ease. I just wanted to enjoy myself. Who doesn't like to go on a trip. It's exciting! The thought of leaving your normal routine is exciting. Sure it doesn't have to be very far. It's just the thought of getting in your car or truck and driving. On Sunday’s in L.A. I would cruise up to Malibu and go to this beach called El Matador Beach. If you’ve ever seen a music video with a beach, 80% of the time, it was shot there. It was my “get a way” spot. Now I've done this many times before in the past. In Iowa it was the gravel roads. In Minnesota it was the river. But it L.A. it was a little different. I’d “Fill It Up”, drive through the Santa Monica Mountains, and then I’d just sit for hours listening to music while looking at this…..
